Microbiology Infection And Immunology - Introduction
Subjects that lead to the major in Microbiology, Infection and Immunology will introduce you to the diverse world of microbes and the roles they play not only in causing infectious disease but also in both creating and maintaining life as we know it. The characteristics of microbes and other agents of infection and their role in infectious disease are described, as is the role of the immune system in defending against infectious agents and tumours, and causing diseases such as allergies. The diversity of microbial life is outlined with the focus on bacteria and viruses. The basic life cycles of microbes are discussed and their environmental activities and behaviours discussed in terms of metabolic and genetic processes.
This knowledge provides a basis to explore strategies to prevent disease including the design of antibiotics, immuno-modulatory agents, vaccines and other public health interventions. The Microbiology, Infection and Immunology major will provide you with an understanding of the role that microbiology and immunology are playing in underpinning so much vital research in the areas of medicine, public health and biotechnology.
Making your choices
We believe that subjects chosen from Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Genetics, Anatomy and Cell Biology, Physiology, Pathology and Pharmacology all augment a study of Microorganisms, Infections and Immunology. The following course plans for your second year are suggestions that we think might interest and excite you. For each plan, the top row of boxes are 1st semester subjects, the row underneath 2nd semester subjects. Once you look at these plans you will be able to see how to make different combinations and you can suggest some others. Don't forget to include Breadth subjects - several combinations are possible for these subjects as well.
Microbiology, Infections and Responses, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Pathology and Pharmacology |
||||
Principles of Microbiology and Immunology |
Experimental Microbiology |
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology |
B R E A D T H |
This subject combination allows you to take both second year Microbiology, Infection and Immunology pre-requisite subjects in the same semester, a combination that many students find ideal. |
Techniques in Molecular Science |
Fundamentals of Pharmacology |
Exploring Human Disease |
Majors in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Pathology and Pharmacology are also available with this combination of subjects. Of course, other combinations are possible. |

Principles of Microbiology and Immunology |
Experimental Microbiology |
Principles of Genetics |
B R E A D T H |
This subject combination allows you to take both second year Microbiology, Infection and Immunology pre-requisite subjects in the same semester, a combination that many students find ideal, together with the three Genetics subjects required for the Genetics major. |
Genes and Genomes |
Experiments in Genetics |

Principles of Microbiology and Immunology |
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology |
Principles of Human Structure | B R E A D T H |
This subject combination allows you to take both the Microbiology, Infection and Immunology pre-requisite subjects together with the prerequisite subjects for entry into graduate courses in Medicine, etc. |
Experimental Microbiology |
Techniques in Molecular Science | Integrative Human Physiology | Adding Techniques in Molecular Science would provide a major in Biochemistry and Cell Biology as well |
