Waste Disposal - General Waste
Return to Waste Disposal - Introduction
Non-Contaminated Glass/Plasticware
All unwanted non-contaminated glass/plasticware such as empty bottles and Winchesters, all broken or unwanted laboratory glassware (non-contaminated) must be disposed of via the industrial wheelie bin located in the autoclave room on the Ground Floor, or alternatively, in the wheelie bins located in the loading area at the back of the building . This material does not need to go through autoclaving to be disposed of and must not be left in Room E06
Cardboard and Co-mingled Recyclable Items
Cardboard should be placed in the large Hessian Recycling Bales located in Room E06 at the back of the building. Please remove any plastic or Styrofoam packaging, excess tape etc and collapse the boxes so that they are flat before putting them into the bales. Boxes must not be left in the corridors – they must be physically taken down to the recycling bin by a staff member.
Recycling wheelie bins are found in Room E06. These wheelie bins are for co-mingled recyclable items including paper, cans, bottles, milk cartons etc. Laboratory waste cannot be placed in them under any circumstances. Even if you believe that it is clean, the people at VISY who hand-sort the contents of these bins will not accept anything that looks like it came out of a laboratory. This means that you cannot use these bins to dispose of autoclaved glassware, old chemical bottles, empty carboys etc.
Any mistakes will jeopardize our Recycling Program so please be vigilant!
You can use the VISY bins to collect paper but if you place them in the corridors (as per the old arrangements) this paper will not be recycled. For the paper to be recycled, you must empty your VISY bins into the wheelie bins in Room E06.
Bulk Paper (i.e. closing an office) can be deposited in the red and blue wheelie bins outside the back of the Baillieu Library.
Styrofoam Waste
Polystyrene waste (e.g. eskies) is now being recycled which will further reduce the Department’s environmental footprint. Please ensure that:
- polystyrene containers are empty, please remove ice bricks, packaging etc
- polystyrene containers are clean, please remove any labels or sticky tape
Any containers with contents or labels will not be taken away for recycling.
Styrofoam containers should be placed in Room E06 in the wheelie bin liners supplied. If there are no wheelie bin liners, more can be found on the shelves or obtained from the Autoclave Room G12.
Old Equipment / Hard Waste
All old computers and related equipment should be disposed of via IT. Log the items
requiring disposal through the online submission form, which can be found at:
http://www.mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/bmsit/support_request.
This is the same online form that should be used for any IT requests. This will ensure
that these items are recycled via e-recycling.
For all other old equipment/ hard waste, please see the Departmental Manager for the location of the disposal area.
