Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Department of Microbiology and Immunology

Welcome

Professor Roy Robins-Browne, MB BCh PhD DTMH Witw. FCPath(SA) FRCPath FRCPA FASM.

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology provides outstanding career opportunities for staff and superb training facilities for postgraduate and undergraduate students.

The Department occupies 7 floors of a building on the University campus and has extensive research, teaching and service laboratory space, all of which was recently renovated to a high standard.

The Department has 13 full time Academic staff, and around 12 Research Fellows, 16 Research Officers, 15 Research Assistants, 70 graduate students, 23 Honours students and 28 general staff.

The Department also houses the State Public Health Laboratory for Microbiology, known as the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit, and is involved in the national Cooperative Research Centre for Vaccine Technology.

The Department is a relaxed and friendly place with a staff committed to their central role as teachers and researchers. Our performance in both of these endeavours is second to none in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science, as judged by the outcome of quality of teaching questionnaires and research grant success.

For prospective students, there has never been a better time to study microbiology and immunology. Science is now squarely in the radar of our political leaders, who see the need for Australia to be a knowledge-based nation, focussing on its innovative skills and high technology.

Microbiology and immunology are at the heart of the biotechnology revolution. In addition, the study of micro-organisms and the immune system has provided us with fantastic opportunities to improve medicine, the environment and make an impact on many of our industries.

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is ideally suited as a place to study these disciplines. We are in the centre of the most densely packed research precinct in Australia.

We also boast our own Nobel Laureate, Professor Peter Doherty, and are blessed with a number of senior individuals connected to medicine, industry and biotechnology worldwide.

Please browse through our website for more details about our teaching, research, training and service activities and don’t hesitate to contact us if you need more specific information.
